Scabiosa 'Black Knight' seedling/small plant
Scabiosa 'Black Knight'(Scabiosa atropurpurea) is a stunning variety with deep maroon, almost black blooms. It performs really well in South West Victoriaâs climate, especially with well-drained soil and a sunny spot.
đPerfect as a cut-flower.
* Sunlight: Full sun is essentialâat least 6 hours a day.
* Soil: Well-draining, slightly alkaline to neutral soil is ideal.
- Loam or sandy loam is perfect.
- If you have clay, amend it with compost and coarse sand.
* Seed or Seedlings:
- Space plants about 30 cm apart for airflow and flower production.
- Depth: Sow seeds just under the soil surfaceâlight helps germination.
* Watering:
- Water regularly while young.
- Once established, it's quite drought-tolerant.
* Fertilising:
- Use a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertiliser to promote flowers.
- Over-fertilising leads to leafy growth with fewer flowers.
* Deadheading:
- Regularly remove spent flowers to extend blooming into autumn.
* Staking:
- Tall stems may need light staking in windy areasâespecially near the coast.
* Cutting Back:
- Cut back after flowering or in late autumn to tidy up.
Pests & Problems
* Generally hardy, but watch for:
- Powdery mildew in humid or overcrowded areasâthin out plants if needed.
- Aphids can occasionally appear on new growthâjust spray with water or neem oil if needed.
đAttracts bees and butterflies.
đExcellent cut flowerâharvest in the morning when blooms are just opening.
đŚWill self-seed in ideal conditions, but not invasive.
